AuDHD & me
If you’re neurodivergent like me, you’ll know the many impacts it can have on your capacity for writing (or anything else). Here’s some advice from writers on how they handle it.
BBC open call
“Our Open Call is not a competition but a means by which the BBC seeks out the best writing talent. We look for writers with the strongest potential to be developed and produced for BBC broadcast. You could be new to writing or new to the BBC but equally, you may be a playwright looking to write for TV, or you’ve written for radio drama and would like to try your hand at writing for CBBC.”
Submissions are open between 12 noon on Tuesday 5 November and 12 noon on Tuesday 3 December 2024. Get that script written or dusted off or polished.
Civic Journalism Lab
I really recommend that you follow CJL here on Substack and, if you have time and are interested, join their mailing list to be invited to free webinars and etc. You can also catch up on previous webinars via YouTube; here’s a good recent one …
Inclusive Journalism Cymru
“One of Inclusive Journalism Cymru’s aims is to create and offer opportunities for those of us who may have been marginalised or excluded by the media industry. That’s why we’ve partnered with the Wales Broadcast Archive on an exciting project that will publish work from three of our members …
The idea is that the process will be as inclusive and supportive as possible. It’s open to anyone who’s a member of Inclusive Journalism Cymru. Membership is free and you can join by completing the quick form on our website.
This will be a paid opportunity for marginalised journalists and creatives to respond to material from the Wales Broadcast Archive in three separate commissions. A series of events will follow the completion of this project, showcasing the work and offering an opportunity to meet and learn from other members. There will be a conscious decision to select a candidate from north, mid and south Wales to reflect as wide a range of geographical perspectives as possible.”
Closing date for submissions 9 October at midnight
They will notify successful applicants on 30 October
The collection will be published in February 2025
Reader feedback
I’d be so grateful if you could use this form 👇 to record anything you’d like to say about Bylines Cymru from the viewpoint of being a reader, and encourage other readers you know to do so too, if you haven’t already. It’s completely anonymous, and I’m so grateful to all who take the time and trouble. It will truly help us evolve for the better.
Storyseeking
As part of our current Media Cymru-funded research project, we’ve been moodling over the concept of a ‘storyseeker’. Some people seem to have a gift for spotting / smelling a story that wants to be told, by themselves or by others. But perhaps it’s a talent anyone can develop simply by keeping it more in the front of their mind / keeping their ears peeled day to day. Would you fancy meeting up on Zoom to explore this further?
That’s plenty for now! Have a great evening.
